RFID Wristbands Applications and Benefits

RFID enabled wristbands are used for various purposes across a number if industries. Schools, hospitals, amusement parks, militaries, cruise ships and a number of other enterprises are moving forward with projects to put RFID tags into wristbands. RFID enabled wristbands are ideal for various applications where it is vital to provide location or privileged services to patrons, patients, workers, temporary visitors or other personnel groups. Some of the applications that come to mind are in healthcare, where these wristbands can provide patient safety and security; in the entertainment industry where wristbands can be used for convenience and customer safety; the U.S. Department of Defense can use Radio-frequency identification wristbands to track soldiers, and combat casualties, and higher education facilities could used RFID wristbands to monitor attendance and increase student safety. While the above mentioned applications are important, the list does not end there, these bands can be used across most industries for various applications.

amusementpark451 RFID Wristbands Applications and Benefits

What is an RFID Enabled Wristbands?

In simple terms, RFID bands systems contain two parts: a tag and a reader. An RFID tag embedded in the wristband contains an antenna; the majority of these tags are passive. Passive RFID tags are small data transponders that are powered by the radiation received from a querying RFID reader – these tags “wake – up” when irradiated by the reader.Active RFID wristbands contain batteries and can send signals to readers. Readers can be mounted on walls, doorways, ceiling or be hand held.A lost child wearing a barcode wristband in RFID bands in an amusement park can be located by the reader infrastructure which then transmits that location information to his/her parents.

RFID-Wristbands in Healthcare:

There are many applications for RFID technology in healthcare. These bands specifically can be used in patient safety applications. These applications can provide patient tracking and identification services through the use of Radio-frequency identification wristbands. Additionally the use of RFID bands in healthcare can improve resource utilization and expedite patient admission process within all hospital departments. Due to the lack of real-time data, majority of the hospitals find it hard to keep track of their patients’ whereabouts while the hospital staff is on the move, thus leading to delays in patient admission from the emergency department.By assigning RFID bands to patients at the point of admission, recording patient information on these wristbands and strategically placing RFID readers throughout the hospital, patients can be located and identified while moving freely around the hospital, thus decreasing delays throughout the hospital.

In addition, RFID wristbands can be used to record patient information to correctly identify patients.Incorrect identification of patients can lead to incorrect drug administration, execution of undesired procedures, misfiling of results and medical documentation and can cause general delays.RFID enabled wristbands can, not only store patient information, but can have read and write capabilities as well.Usually, nurses and hospital personnel take notes by hand and then enter them into databases, leaving room for human error and causing general delays in hospital proceedings. With RFID enabled wristbands patient information, can be retrieved from the database via a wireless network by getting RFID enabled handheld devices in the vicinity of the wristbands. Hospital personal can obtain information on their patient instantly through patient’s wristband. With the use of RFID enabled wristbands doctors and nurses can monitor patients’ in real time, decrease mistakes and allow for a faster patient admission and treatment.

Some hospitals are already employing RFID enabled wristbands to help them track and identify patients. In 2003, The Albert Einstein Healthcare Network in Philadelphia, PA deployed a passive RFID identification tracking system. Since the deployment the hospital increased emergency department traffic flow by 24% and decreased the number of patients leaving before receiving care by 3%.

RFID Enabled Wristbands in the Entertainment Industry

RFID wristbands can have various applications in the entertainment industry. Amusement parks, cruises, concerts and festivals could all benefit from Radio-frequency identification wristband deployment. RFID bands in amusement parks can provide customers with convenience and security. According to some studies, over 27% of all families that visit an amusement park loose one of their children while there. With the use of these bands parks can prevent children from being lost. These bands assigned to park goers at the point of ticket purchase, can store basic information such as name, telephone number and address of the person wearing the wristband. Parents with lost children could go to park administration and retrieve their child’s location.Paramount’s Great American in Santa Clara, CA is a perfect example of an amusement park using RFID enabled wristbands to track park goers. Great American attendees get RFID bands with his/her name. One of many antennas scattered throughout the park -whichever is closest to the person at any given moment -reads the wristband and sends the information to the park’s administration.Parents who lose their children can go to any service kiosk, wave their own wristband, and bring up maps showing their kids’ locations.

Cruises, concerts and festivals could all benefit from similar Radio-frequency identification wristband applications. By utilizing RFID enabled wristbands, these ventures can not only track their customers but also provide them with convenience and security.

Royal Caribbean Oasis did just that, when it set sail in December 2009. The world’s largest cruise ship provided its customers with RFID wristbands that not only offered families and groups a way to track their members, but to also allowed users to make reservations at restaurant’s and spas. The application used Wi-Fi based RFID tags in wristbands and Apple iPhones. The location information was transmitted to the iPhone user to send alerts, to those wearing wristbands. This allowed for users to move freely about the cruise ship without worrying about their family members being lost. 2Live sector can also benefit from Radio-frequency identification wristband deployment. By storing bank account information on RFID enabled wristbands, attendees will not need to bring their debit cards, cash, and credit cards to the venue, therefore eliminating theft that occurs at concerts, sporting events and other similar events. Similarly, medical information can be stored on Radio-frequency identification wristbands, therefore upgrading safety for individuals in case of an emergency. Additionally, RFID enabled wristbands allow administration personal to monitor the crowds. By scanning wristbands by readers that contain all of the information of all the wristband holders attending, and sending this data wirelessly to a server, crowds can be monitored and controlled in real time. In 2004, South by Southwest (SXSW), a music festival held annually in Austin, Texas, used Radio-frequency identification wristbands to prevent counterfeiting of wristbands, eliminate over – crowding and to increase public safety at their events.

RFID Wristband Application in Defense

RFID enabled wristband applications vary when it comes to defense. These wristbands can be used to track wounded in warfare, track soldiers on battlefields, help families track relatives and identify victims during natural disasters. In 2007, U.S. Navy used RFID enabled wristbands to track and identify the wounded naval officers arriving at the field hospitals in Iraq. By employing these wristbands and satellite communication, medical personnel could better plan for arriving casualties. Additionally, the U.S. military has been considering using RFID to track soldiers on the battlefield to warn and monitor those going in and out of chemical or biological hot zones.

Some companies have been employing Radio-frequency identification wristbands to help families prevent their loved ones, who are at risk, from wandering away from the house. If an individual wearing the wristband approaches a door, an alarm sounds. This application is perfect for individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s or similar conditions.

Moving Forward

RFID wristbands can be used across many industries, and in various applications. However, the same holds true regardless of the industry or the application: RFID bands are becoming the standard in people identification and tracking.RFID enabled wristbands are used in healthcare, defense, entertainment industries and even some schools are starting to employ RFID to track student attendance. While the cost of Radio-frequency identification wristband systems may seem daunting, the system’s ability track patients in hospitals, cut down cost of counterfeit tickets at festivals, increase security and track wounded is a major plus.

Historical Churches of Bristol-Part 1

St. John’s Church goes back at least to the 12th Century, but it was wholly rebuilt on a section of the town wall in the late 1300′s. Known as St. John on the wall, the new foundation owed its existence to Walter Frampton, who was elected Lord Mayor of Bristol, three times. His tomb is inside.

amusementpark340 Historical Churches of Bristol Part 1

Atop the perpendicular tower is the city’s only remaining mediaeval spire. It’s an example of a narrow aisleless church – but its height gives a feeling of space.

Inside is an alabaster tomb with no inscription. It is thought to be William Barrett, who is the antiquarian to be that of Thomas Rosley, who died in 1478, and has a brass to his memory in the church above. Rowley had six sons and six daughters and there are figures representing this on the side of the tomb.

St. John’s was joined to the church of St. Lawrence, which stood to the south and shared the same tower. But as 1580, through lack of money, was shut down and demolished soon after.

You can reach St. John’s churchyard through Tailor’s Court, which was known for Hasardysgarden in 1390. It was consecrated in 1409, though there was opposition from St. James Priory.

**************************

St. James Church was originally built as a small Priory of Benedictine, monks.

Founded in the 1120′s by Earl Robert of Gloucester. Tradition says that when Bristol Castle was being built, every 10th stone brought from Normandy was given for the construction of this church.

In 1374, St. James became the church of a new parish. A perpendicular tower was added for the parish bells. It has the idiosyncrasy of one pinnacle rising higher than the other three. The nave was given a new timber roof, resting on carved stone corbels.

The Little Brothers of Nazareth is the present custodians. The Church houses the tomb of Sir Charles Somerset, who died in 1598, at the age of 64.

The week – long St. James Fair was held annually in the churchyard from mediaeval times. A great deal of business and trading was carried on and the streets around were filled with stalls and booths. There were amusements as well, and the church elders gradually decided that such goings-on were not suitable. So in 1837, they held the last fair. The Fair was attended by: thirty merchants, as well as circuses, actors, and peep- shows. Towards the end of the 19th Century, the churchyard was used occasionally as a fairground and later as a public park. Eventually it was covered by a large department store. The base of the old churchyard remains.

************************************

St. Stephen’s Church was outside the old city wall, but enclosed by the later one. The elegance of its 15th Century Perpendicular Gothic style tower has been remarked upon for centuries by travelers and historians.

Before the reformation, St. Stephens contained several chantry chapels, but these altars were destroyed in the period of religious zeal. The tomb of the founder of one of these chantries remains – that of Edmund Blanket, who died in 1371. There is also a memorial to Martin Pring, who sailed to America and discovered Plymouth Harbor in 1603.

The crisp, carved lines of the tower still rise above the far less distinguished buildings that this century has thrown around it. The body of the church however is shadowed by this enclosure.

St. Stephens is the official parish church of the city, and often times holds lunchtime organ concerts.

*******************************

St. Marks is known as the Lord Mayor’s chapel. Originally it was the chapel of the Hospital of the Gaunts. Tradition says that because the Berkeley family endowed it — it was built looking not east, but northeast, facing the Berkeley lands.

St. Marks was endowed to the bon-hommes, who occupied ground from College Green, to Pipe Lane. They give daily help to 100 people.

Nearby Orchard Street was named for its orchard.

The east- end of the church was reconstructed around 1520, but dates back to the 13th Century. The tower dates from 1487. Grotesque carvings decorate the exterior of the tower and nave. By the 1720′s only the chapel remained, and even that was in poor repair. It was then repaired and used as the Corporation Chapel.

***********************************

St. Paul Church opened in 1974. It became known as the wedding cake church from the unusual tiered tower, also described as semi- Chinese.

St. Paul Church adjoins the church and was once a part of the churchyard. Lacking in an adequate congregation, the church was closed in 1988, and in 2001 a careful renovation of the church begun.

Southern Utah – The Colorful Country

The color country of southern Utah! That’s our logo. We used to be the fruit basket of America because I can remember the old white sign with the faded cornucopia and it’s colorful fruits pouring from it’s mouth. It was such a tired, old sign and probably painted sometime in the early 70′s. But I always liked it. It gave me the sense that there was such an abundance of nature. With a good 7 months a year where the sun shines warm enough to keep things growing, it was easy for nature to produce. And an abundance of nature is what southern Utah is.

amusementpark277 Southern Utah The Colorful Country

So why did southern Utah’s logo get changed to the color country? From my window I see mountains that are purple, blue, green, red, white, pink, black, coral and brown. And these aren’t just subtle hues of each color. I’m talking full value. I’m surrounded by these colors and sometimes it just blows my mind how varied in color and rich this landscape is. In fact I have been told, and even with all the traveling I have done, have yet to dispute. That southern Utah is the most colorful state in the u.S. Even possibly in the whole world. It is also my understanding that Utah is the state with the highest concentration of national and recreational parks, boasting Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon, Snow Canyon, Red Cliffs, Moab, etc. And all being absolutely stunning.

One thing about being from Utah which has amused me to no end are the reactions I get from various people when asked where I’m from. And when I answer there are 2 standard replies that I have pretty much heard across the board. Reply a: Why would you live there, you cant drink in Utah? Reply b: Wow! You are so lucky. And 9 times out of 10, reply a has never even visited Utah. Coming here changes you. It’s silent, strong, striking and it’s beautiful.

Personal Injury – Vacation Accidents

The onset of cold and snowy weather often brings on a desire to escape to a sunny warm place for a winter vacation. Unfortunately, what started out as a wonderful trip can be ruined by a personal injury while you are away.

amusementpark140 Personal Injury Vacation Accidents

There are, of course, a variety of ways that you might be injured on vacation, or traveling to a vacation. Airports are arenas for hustling, rushing, anxious travelers to catch flights, often creating hazards for fellow travelers. Airports themselves may have limited liability for injuries suffered on their premises. Private establishments, such as restaurants or bars, within the airport have a duty to provide you with a reasonably safe place to sit, relax and enjoy meals. If they fail to meet that obligation and you are injured, you may be entitled to recover compensation.

Much attention has been drawn recently to delays suffered by passengers sitting and suffering hour after hour waiting to deplane or takeoff. Recently, a few states have enacted an Airline Passengers’ Bill of Rights, which specifically outlines how an airline is required to treat a passenger and whether or not an airline is required to offer compensation for delays. Currently, New Jersey does not have such a law, but a bill to enact one is pending in the Legislature.

Cruise ship injuries have gained notoriety as such vacations have become more popular. A cruise ship is no different than a hotel on land – both have the duty to provide a reasonably safe place for you. Injuries suffered by you because of their failure to do so, may entitle you to compensation.

Tours and boat rides may be dangerous when traveling to other countries while on vacation. Operators neither licensed, nor connected with a reputable resort or hotel present hazardous opportunities for serious injuries. Often times their equipment is defective and does meet standards which are commonplace in the United States. Many of these operators have no insurance, leaving you without recourse if injured due to their negligence. While on vacation, it is important to only choose reputable tour companies.

Many people enjoy amusement parks, theme parks or water parks while on vacation. Injuries on defective rides, or improperly maintained walkways within such parks are not uncommon. Hundreds of people are left each year with neck, back and head injuries from amusement and theme park mishaps, causing them to spend significant time in hospitals or getting other medical treatment instead of enjoying their vacation. Some states do not regulate safety procedures for amusement and theme parks.

Once you have landed at your destination, you may rent a car to enjoy your vacation. All persons using the roadways have a duty to operate their motor vehicles in a reasonably safe manner. Failing to do so, causing an accident and injuries, may result in liability. It is important for you to know that the car you are renting is sufficiently insured either through the rental car agency, or your own policy.

If you do suffer an injury while on vacation it is vital that you notify the manager of your hotel, the captain of the ship, the manager of the amusement park, so there is a record of what happened. When you come home, you want to be able to access the person whom you notified and the documentation they created on the particulars of your accident.

Some states offer immunity to certain recreational or vacation establishments from civil liability for negligence, unless certain conditions are met. For example, in New Jersey, amusement park and amusement ride owners are protected from injuries to riders unless the accident has been reported to the owner within ninety (90) days.

If a lawsuit needs to filed, you may be limited as to where it can be filed, depending on the type of accident you had and where it happened.

If your vacation has been spoiled by an accident, it is important that you contact an experienced personal injury lawyer to protect your rights right away.

Depending on the location you choose, a trip to the beach might mean relaxing in the sand and sun, or enjoying the nightlife along the entertainment strips.
